CBD Oil and Pain Relief: Nature's Painkiller

One of the things that CBD is most well-known for and most commonly used for is its amazing pain-killing properties. Chronic pain affects more than 3 million people in the United States every year, which is what makes the use of a natural remedy especially important for those dealing with neuropathic and chronic pain (pain that lasts for more than a few months).

While there isn't a cure for chronic pain, it can be treated.

The problem is that, in the US, the most common treatments for chronic pain are nerve blocks, steroids, and opioids, many of which carry a high risk of awful side effects and even addiction.

Even the over-the-counter, non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and ibuprofen are dangerous if used regularly. Over 100,000 people are hospitalized each year from taking too much of these drugs, and nearly 15,000 people die from them.

Thankfully, research is showing that these dangerous narcotics and NSAIDs are not the only option for pain relief.

Studies have shown that incorporating CBD into one's treatment regimen--along with physical therapy and/or self-care--shows to be very effective for natural, plant-based pain relief.

In addition to this, CBD is fundamentally different than most prescribed painkillers: it’s not addictive, it's non-toxic, and it has very minimal side effects if any.

  1. How CBD Works with the Body to Relieve Pain

Researchers believe that the correlation between CBD Oil and pain relief lies in how the CBD interacts with receptors in the brain and immune system.

These receptors are made of tiny proteins that are attached to the cells and receive chemical signals from different stimuli to help the cells respond. This creates the anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects of CBD that help with pain management.

Healthline wrote an article on CBD Oil and pain relief, and they said, “One 2008 review assessed how good CBD works to relieve chronic pain. The review looked at studies conducted between the late 1980s and 2007. Based on these reviews, researchers concluded CBD was effective in overall pain management without adverse side effects. ”

  1. Research Results for CBD Oil and Pain Relief

CBD Oil has become the subject of many different studies over the past few decades covering a wide variety of topics. And the number of studies on CBD Oil and pain relief is no exception.

  • A 2007 study looked at the effects of cannabinoids on treating the debilitating pain experienced by 50-70% of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The double-blind placebo-controlled study concluded that “cannabinoids including the cannabidiol (CBD)/THC buccal spray are effective in treating neuropathic pain in MS.”
  • Another 2007 study looked at the long-term tolerability and effectiveness of a THC/CBD pharmaceutical known as Sativex. The study concluded that “THC/CBD was effective, with no evidence of tolerance, in these select patients with CNP and MS who completed approximately 2 years of treatment.”
  • A 2014 study stated that “The endocannabinoid system has been elucidated over the last several years, demonstrating a significant interface with pain homeostasis. Exogenous (plant-based) cannabinoids have been demonstrated to be effective in a range of experimental neuropathic pain models, and there is mounting evidence for therapeutic use in human neuropathic pain conditions.”
  • A 2011 study evaluated the effects of two non-psychoactive cannabinoids, CBD and CBC, on pain management. The study concluded that “CBD and CBC stimulated descending pathways of antinociception and caused analgesia by interacting with several target proteins involved in nociceptive control. These compounds might represent useful therapeutic agents with multiple mechanisms of action.”

While research continues to help us fully understand the effectiveness of CBD oil as a natural pain reliever, all the evidence of these last decades of study point to CBD being a very effectual method of managing chronic pain.
